September Start-Up Recommendations

Elementary
  • confirm with administration yearly budget allocations for learning resources and supplies;
  • review and, if necessary, modify library policies regrading circulation in Destiny;
  • set year calendar (e.g. ceiling date, professional devleopment days and holidays);
  • identify the times the library is open outside of instructional times. These times are determined at the teacher-librarian's discretion.
  • generate user barcodes for students. Refer to Destiny manual for options;
  • scheduling is schools specific. Consult with your school staff and professional colleagues (LST, Music) before creatiing a library timetable.
  • create a timetable:
    • schedule 50 minutes per Grade K-3/4 division
    • schedule personal preparation time and library administration time;
  • search for lost books or payment from last June (i.e. give overdue notices to patrons who did not return books or paid fines from previous year);
  • optional - Prepare for:
    • student monitors (application process, selection process, training, and schedule);
    • parent volunteers (create notice home, orientation,job description);
    • host an orientation and welcome for new staff

Secondary
  • confirm with administration yearly budget allocations for learning resources and supplies;
  • set calendar dates for the year in Destiny (ceiling date) and Outlook (if applicable- professional development days, holidays, site specific booking calendar etc.);
  • identify availability of supervisory aides for lunch time openings;
  • identify and schedule personal prepartion time (at teacher-librarians discretion);
  • process summer deliveries including mail, magazines, and orders;
  • host an orientation and welcome for staff (include email to staff regarding booking procedures, general library information, services offered, district digital account information, and applicable district notices);
  • if applicable, confirm clerical hours with administration;
  • arrange library orientations for all grade 8s, ELL, and Bases classes;
  • verify equipment is in working condition and submit requests to IMS if necessary;
  • decide and communicate study block student routines, expectations etc.;
  • determine how drop-in students from various classes will be handled;
  • send out overdue notices to students and staff with any outstanding fines;
  • set-up library volunteers (application process, selection process, training, and schedule);
  • schedule book exchanges for any english classes
