family.jpgThe Surrey Schools Welcome Centre assists new students and their families with their integration into the Surrey School District and the community.

Staff provide language assessment, registration support and information about the B.C. education system and school and community programs. Services include:

  • School orientation and registration support
  • Holistic language assessment and placement assistance
  • Community awareness and capacity building
  • Ongoing support relating to multiculturalism and settlement
  • Extensive resource library
  • Settlement and multicultural workers
  • Partnership programs

Settlement workers

Settlement workers provide newcomer students and their families knowledge about Canadian systems and the skills needed to transition into a new community smoothly.

Multicultural workers

Multicultural workers have extensive experience in dealing with cross-cultural issues and are able to respond sensitively to the academic needs of ELL students.


The Welcome Centre also offers a variety of programs designed to:

  • Facilitate social adaptation and settlement
  • Develop positive relationships and increase self-esteem
  • Increase functional communication skills
  • Encourage healthy lifestyles
  • Celebrate cultural diversity
