Surrey Schools works with the Fraser Health Authority​ and the Ministry of Education so that  all foods offered at school food events are safe and healthy.

  • Food safety is a priority for all school events.
  • FoodSafe practices as established by the Ministry of Health must be followed. 
  • The person in charge of food for an event must have successfully completed FoodSafe Level I (available through Fraser Health).

Basic Food Safety Principles

  • Wash your hands with soap and warm water after using the washroom, and often during food preparation.
  • Keep surfaces like countertops, cutting boards and utensils clean by washing with hot, soapy water and disinfectant.
  • Food servers don’t handle money; money takers don’t handle food.
  • Prevent cross contamination by keeping raw and cooked foods separate.
  • Refrigerate perishable foods below 4 degrees C.  Use a thermometer to check temperatures.
  • Perishable foods should be prepared and eaten within two hours of removal from refrigerated storage.

Food safety is the responsibility of the district's Food and Nutrition Services department, which also manages the district's Breakfast Clubs and school lunch programs. Visit the Food Safety webpage for more information.


School Nutrition

All children need nutritious food to grow and develop to their full potential. The Surrey School District supports the Ministry of Education's Guidelines for Food and Beverage Sales in B.C. Schools. These nutrition standards apply to all school-sponsored events where food or beverages are sold.
